RECENT EVENTS

“ARMENIAN-TURKISH STUDENT EXCHANGE”
On April 2-4, 2008 CMI held a roundtable in Armenian-Turkish student exchange

A roundtable on Armenian-Turkish student exchange was held at the Caucasus Media Institute on April 18, 2008. During the roundtable, participants of a joint project, aimed at fostering Armenian-Turkish relations and jointly implemented by the CMI and the Heinrich Boell Foundation, told students and journalists about their impressions of the trip to Turkey. After the presentation those present exchanged ideas on the prospects of development of Armenian-Turkish relations.
On March 16-18, 2008, CMI students Angelina Haroutyunyan and Nikolay Torosyan together with the CMI Director Alexander Iskandaryan paid a three-day visit to Turkey. They visited Bosfor University, Galatasaray University and the editorial office of Agos, and met with representatives of Helsinki Association.
During the roundtable the CMI students pointed out that the societies of Armenia and Turkey have major stereotypes that negatively affect attempts of establishing contacts on the level of students, researchers, NGO representatives, etc. Mutual problems in the political field, based on the historical memories, in particular, connected with the issue of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire, seriously hinder the establishment of contacts between the civil societies of Armenia and Turkey.
Besides, during the discussion the participants agreed upon the fact that during the recent years there had been significant changes on the Genocide issue in the Turkish society that used to be on the guard against any Armenian-Turkish dialogue. If the topic used to represent a kind of taboo in Turkey’s domestic and social life, the situation has significantly changed. In any case, at some universities and non-governmental organizations of Istanbul, partially also in Ankara, it became possible to openly discuss this issue in the context of Armenian-Turkish relations.
According to the participants of the roundtable, there is the impression that because of the poor awareness of each other, representatives of the civil societies of Armenia and Turkey do not make full use of opportunities for establishing dialogue. Projects of Armenian-Turkish contacts are not just very important for changing the stereotypes, but can also contribute to the establishment of political relations between both countries.

MAKING A PHOTO STORY
Workshop at the CMI on April 14-18, 2008 supported by Press Now

Trainer: Søren Pagter, Head of the Department of Photojournalism at the Danish School of Media and Journalism
Goals:
- To teach CMI photojournalism students how to make a photo story
- To test if the work of CMI photojournalism students meets Mr. Pagter’s requirements (interim exam)
Activities:
-Two lectures by Mr. Pagter, one about the dedicated story tellers in photojournalism and one about how to build up a photo report (which types of pictures are needed?)
-After the lectures, the students put theory into practice by shooting their individual photo stories. They could choose the subject of their story themselves, it is dedication that matters. The goal is that the students are able to produce a photo story that has an impact on the viewer
-The photo story and the previous work of all students were reviewed and positively evaluated by Mr. Pagter and a local CMI trainer. The students received guidance on their future work.
